Purpose:

This set of programs strengthens fundamental communication skills needed to work with others effectively. It is suitable for anyone, but highly recommended for managers and supervisors who must work through and with others on a daily basis.

Structure:

A modular program of mix and match topics all designed to help people be as specific and thorough in their communication as possible. These modules are four hours in length which make them easy to deliver to busy people. They are workshop based and provide lots of opportunity to practice the tools.

  • Principles of Speaking and Listening

Effective communication requires both a listener and a speaker who not only share words, but also communicate meaning that both can understand. Often people walk away from a conversation thinking they know what was said and find out later that they really did not have the same understanding. This module addresses the critical skills of listening and speaking effectively.

  • Communicating for Results

Part of building shared understanding is providing the proper context, background, and specific points in a comprehensive way. Skipping over points leads to misunderstandings, breakdowns, and perhaps flared tempers. Communicating for Results teaches how to cover all the bases when communicating.

  • Generating Commitment

Engaging others in working together to accomplish results is what makes for good teamwork. The bottom line in engagement is commitment. Without commitment, people don’t get things done. This class teaches how to generate commitment from others.

  • Building Agreement

A lot of the communication that occurs in the workplace has to do with completing work on time and to specification. But many people do not know how to make clear, specific requests and assure that work is followed up and completed as agreed. Participants learn about making requests, promises, and fulfilling agreements.

  • Language of Accountability

Accountability is essential inside organizations. If you can’t count on people to do what they say, then nothing works. But there is a way to build accountability that ensures success, and that is taught in the module.

  • Managing Breakdowns

The problem is not that there are breakdowns in communication. Whenever people are involved, breakdowns will happen. The real challenge is using breakdowns to renew commitment, agreement, and action to move things forward. In this class, participants learn how to manage a breakdown so it promotes movement rather than derailment.

  • Conflict Management

Many people hate conflict because it often involves intense emotions and fuels problems rather than resolves them. Often the missing ingredient is being able to confront difficulties and find alternative solutions without emotional charge. Conflict Management offers a new way of working with the differences in opinion, disappointment, and frustration we have with one another.

  • Generating Possibility

Creativity is a very important ingredient to business success. In a fast moving, competitive market environment, organizations must come up with new ideas for products and services all the time. Unfortunately, groups of people often kill the creative spirit rather than foster possibility. This class helps people create a space of possibility in their conversations.
